I Am Not An Evangelical – I Am A Christian

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 11: 26

As a Christian, by the Grace of God, I am a disciple of Jesus and a servant of God. I believe in the basic tenants of Reformed theology of election and predestination. However, evangelicals, of which I am not, believe in a “save yourself” style of salvation.

On christianity.com, a leading evangelical website, in an article titled, “What Is Evangelical Christianity?”, the first paragraph says this…

“A prominent picture in Christianity is Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Evangelical Christians believe that by accepting Jesus and his sacrifice for us, we save our souls and go to Heaven once we die.”

This is a “work of righteousness” type of salvation based on the will of man by a work of faith in choosing for ourselves to accept Jesus as our personal savior. This is plainly not scriptural as scripture teaches that we are born-again by the will of God who saves they whom He elected to be saved and predestined their time of salvation.

Ephesians 1:3-6 KJV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: [4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: [5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, [6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

These are just a few of the many verses about election and predestination that are found throughout the New Testament, and anyone willing to read and study these scriptures will see the truth as God gives them understanding.

This does not say that I do not believe in sharing the Gospel. All Christians are given works that God has ordained for us to do when we are saved by Grace.

Ephesians 2:8-11 KJV

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

God has given some to be evangelist some pastors and teachers, elders, bishops and deacons, etc, all who will have different abilities that in their service they will be given moments, as God chooses, to speak of Jesus; most of the time in private or small group settings.

Jesus said, “I know my sheep and they will hear my voice and will follow me.” God uses individual disciples to do His will as He chooses in bringing the elect into His fold; they do so quietly.

So, if someone were to ask me if I was an evangelical, knowing only what they see and hear in the news, especially in connection with “Christian Nationalism”, my answer would simply be this, “By God’s Grace, I am a Christian, a disciple of Jesus and a servant of God. If you would like to know something about Jesus, I will be glad to share with you what I know from New Testament scripture.”

How well do you know what is the New Covenant written about in the New Testament scriptures?

Jesus Made An End To The Law And It Is Obsolete

Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes.

Heb 8:13 In that he says, A new covenant, he has made the first obsolete. Now that which is declared obsolete and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

When one speaks of the Law the first thing that comes to mind is the Ten Commandments, and they would be right. For these commandments are the basis for all of the rules, regulations and causative laws of blessings and curses found in the first five books of the Old Testament.

For the most part, all Christian religions agree that these Laws have been done away. However, there are divisions on whether or not obedience to the Ten Commandments, here after known as The Law, is still required.

However if something ends and is now obsolete, how can one still be subject to that which no longer is here?

Here is the context in which the term “end of The Law” is used.

Rom 10:1  Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

Rom 10:2  For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

Rom 10:3  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Rom 10:4  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

The Apostle Paul is saying that His people, Israel, tried to establish their own righteousness and they failed, and when Christ came He made an end to The Law by His obedience to The Law and fulfilled all the requirements that God had demanded of us. Because of what Jesus has done, we are no longer required to be obedient to The Law in order to be made righteous by The Law. By Christs’ obedience to the Law He made an end of The Law.

Now some will argue that in Matthew 5: 17, 18 where Jesus said He did not come to destroy The Law, that not one jot or tittle will pass away until heaven and earth passes away. Here is what He actually said:

Mat 5:17  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

You see, we must read these verses in complete context. Jesus came to fulfil The Law, even if it takes until the end of time, and that when it is fulfilled it will bring an end to The Law. These parts of the scriptures are always left alone and never mentioned.

Therefore, when did Jesus fulfill The Law. In John 19 we read:

Joh 19:28  After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Joh 19:29  Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

Joh 19:30  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

When Jesus said, “It is finished”, He knew that He had fulfilled what he said in Matthew 5: 17 and 18. The Law had been fulfilled and in doing so, He brought an end to The Law.

The Apostle Paul made mention of this in Colossians 2:

Col 2:13  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

The Law is now obsolete and we can read the full context of this in Hebrews 8:

Heb 8:6  But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Heb 8:7  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

Heb 8:8  For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Heb 8:9  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Heb 8:10  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Heb 8:11  And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

Heb 8:12  For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Heb 8:13 In that he says, A new covenant, he has made the first obsolete. Now that which is declared obsolete and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

For what, then, should The Law be used? The Law is not made for a righteous man but for sinners (1 Timothy 1: 9, 10). It is designed to show sin in man and to bring them to Jesus.

For the Christian, we are no longer under The Law, to be obedient to The Law, which was conditional on our works. As Christians under Grace we are to be obedient to Jesus to do His will, which is unconditional based on God’s love for us. For as God works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure we will find ourselves becoming more willing to have an ever increasing great desire to show our love for Jesus in doing as we have been told to do unconditionally; To love God and to love our neighbor.

As God said in Hebrews, “I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbor , and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.”

Jesus put an end to The Law and it is obsolete and has vanished away.

Being under Grace puts us under the authority of Jesus all because we are in the arms of God being forgiven and loved unconditionally for all eternity. How can we not want but to be obedient to Jesus.

How Election and Evangelism Work Together

I have heard numerous times the question, “If God has already chosen those who will be saved why, then, do we need to do evangelism?” Actually, that is a really good question. Let us see how this works out. It is quite simple, actually.

From 2nd Timothy we read this:

2Ti 1:9  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Here we see that the saving comes first then comes the calling and all of this was planned before the world began.

Then from Ephesians 2: 8,9 the following:

Eph 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 2:9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Knowing that the act of saving by God’s grace comes first only because man, in his sinful state, is dead spiritually to anything that would draw him to God. So, the act of saving, of being born again, has to happen first before anyone can hear the gospel and have the ability to respond to it according to God’s will.

The second thing we should notice is that it is through faith that is given to us as a gift by God that we are saved. How do we get this gift of faith and in what are we to have faith?

In Romans 10: 9, 10 we read about what it is in which we are to have faith:

Rom 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

In order to believe in something one must have faith that it is true. In order to confess that Jesus is Lord and to believe that He was raised from the dead you must have faith with which to make this confession. It is a confession of faith to believe in something.

Again, faith was given to us as a gift by God, but by what means is faith given?

In Romans 10: 17 we are told exactly how faith is given:

Rom 10:17  So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Then, In Romans 10: 13, 14,15 we see how the word of God is given:

Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Rom 10:15  And how shall they preach, except they be sent?

In short, the gift of faith is given through evangelism, in telling people the good news about Jesus, and God brings the one who is sharing the gospel to His elect people as a group or as a singular person. He then saves them so that they have the ability to hear the gospel and then He calls them and gives them the faith with which to believe on Jesus through the message that they hear.

The story of the conversion of Paul is a good example of the saving of one person. Although it is exceptional, it is a good example of how talking one on one is used by God to save someone. Here is the story of Paul’s conversion from the book of Acts:

Act 9:1  And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Act 9:2  And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Act 9:3  And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

Act 9:4  And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Act 9:5  And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it ishard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Act 9:6  And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Act 9:7  And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Act 9:8  And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

Act 9:9  And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

Act 9:10  And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

Act 9:11  And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

Act 9:12  And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

Act 9:13  Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

Act 9:14  And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

Act 9:15  But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

Act 9:16  For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.

Act 9:17  And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Act 9:18  And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

Act 9:19  And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.

Act 9:20  And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

Act 9:21  But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

Act 9:22  But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

Now, as for the saving of a large group. The story of Barnabas and Paul at a place called Antioch in which they were asked to preach in a synagogue. Here is what happened as recorded in Acts 13:

Act 13:38  Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man (Jesus) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

Act 13:39  And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Act 13:40  Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

Act 13:41  Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

Act 13:42  And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

Act 13:43  Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Act 13:44  And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Act 13:45  But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

Act 13:46  Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

Act 13:47  For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

Act 13:48  And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained (appointed) to eternal life believed.

Here we see that all who were chosen by God to be saved believed in a large group setting. After being saved, born-again, they believed in Jesus through the preaching of the word that gave them the faith, given to them by God as a gift, with which to believe.

In short, God has chosen those who will be saved. At their appointed time God saves them – born-again -calls them through the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus that gives them the faith with which they believe in Jesus and they call upon Him to be their Lord and Savior.

Therefore, you see that election and evangelism works well together. It is quite simple, actually.

Christianity Is Not About Politics

Christianity is not about politics. Christians are neither Republicans nor Democrats. The job of Christians is not to directly influence the way to govern a country. It is the Christians duty to obey God.

In 2 Timothy 2 the Apostle Paul writes the following:

2Ti 2:3 You therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
2Ti 2:4 No man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who has chosen him to be a soldier.

Politics: Noun

The activities of the government, members of law-making organizations, or people who try to influence the way to govern a country.

God, being sovereign, has power over all things that He has created, to do what He wills, and there is no one who can question Him, change Him or stop Him from doing as He wills. God puts people and governments in power as He chooses to accomplish what He ordains.

As we read in Daniel 2: 20, 21, it is God who rules over governments and people.

Dan 2:20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
Dan 2:21 And he changes the times and the seasons: he removes kings, and sets up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

In addition, in Romans 13: 1 Paul says this in writing about governments…

Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

In every country, city and town, God puts in charge whomever He wishes. He does this for a reason and most likely, we will never know why. However, even though we may not like whoever it is that God has put in charge, even if we cast a vote, our faith in God’s sovereignty should be enough for us to trust that God’s will is always best.

As Christians, then, the most important thing that we are to do, that will have more influence on governments and individuals alike, than direct intervention, is to be obedient to the command that Jesus gave to His disciples:

Mar_16:15 (KJV) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature.

The one thing that God wants for us to do, outside the Church universal, is to share the Good News of Jesus to all whom God directs us to meet.

God ordains governments and directs them to do His will. That is not for Christians to do. Politics is God’s business, not ours.

For it is God who rises up and takes down governments, and it is by His hands that governments do according to His will and purpose. If we do not trust in God for how to administer governments, what makes us believe that we can do better?

Only God can bring about what is to be, and it is by His power and might that governments do what He has ordained for them. Our trust is to be in Him and not in any work that we may do to influence any government.

In this world, it is God Who rules over governments and not His children.

You Say You Love Jesus… Do You?

Any Christian when asked the question “do you love Jesus?” they will almost always respond with a “yes”. Fair enough, and that is the answer that all Christians should give. The problem is, it may not be true. Here is why.

Look at these verses and answer the question again.

In John 14: 21 we read:

21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

Then in John 14: 23, 24 we read:

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

Do you keep the commandments of Jesus? Here is a test. In Matthew 19: 4 – 6 we read:

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

There is more meaning in these verses than you see at first glance. You see, the family is a type of example of the relationship between Jesus and the Church. There are times when Jesus is referred as the bridegroom and the bride is referred as the Church. And a good explanation of the relationship between the two can be found in Ephesians 5: 22 – 33.

As Christ is the Bridegroom and the Church is the Bride it is an ordained relationship done so by God, and this relationship is not to be separated as Jesus explained in Matthew 19. The marriage between the two is to be between a man and a woman. Anything else is to separate what God has joined together.

As we see in secular society, and among many Christians being accepting of, the separation of marriage to include the unholy union of two people of the same-sex is also an attempt to separate the Church from Jesus. This is in defiance of the command by God that what He has joined together no one should tear apart.

To say that a traditional marriage is not to be just between one man and one woman is to say that we will not obey the commandments of Jesus as we do not love Him enough to obey Him because we want to have marriage to be something that we want, or will agree to, and not what Jesus has commanded us to believe in and obey.

So, the question is still this. Do you love Jesus? If you believe that traditional marriage does not need to be just between one man and one woman and that two people of the same-sex can come together to form this example between Jesus and the Church or even just agree that it is OK to do so, then you would have to say that your answer is ‘ NO ‘ , you do not love Jesus, or you are just ignorant of what the Word of God says and are only going by what someone else, not God, has told you to believe.

Remember, Jesus said, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word“. Are you willing to keep His Word? Then you will have to stand up against homosexual marriages and say that this goes against what God has ordained and you will not agree to it being the norm in today’s society.

No matter how much this may hurt you, or even that it may hurt people you know and love because of this decision, you must take the stand that marriage is to be between one man and one woman and this relationship, ordained by God, is not to be torn asunder. If you cannot do this then you will have to say that you do not love Jesus and you will not have him to rule over you.

So, then, do you really love Jesus?
